Many of you will have seen the stunning photos from our sea kayak trips out to Birling Gap or beyond. As a Club, we are so lucky to have the meanders, the river and the sea to paddle on. But the sea can be a dangerous, unforgiving place. We have to be sure that if we take you out onto the sea, we can bring you home again!
Our instructor Dave L and coach Steve D have built up a good bank of skills and experience in sea kayaks and are ready to start leading member trips. To show proper respect for the sea, they are going to be developing sea trips gradually; Steve and Dave need to be sure that the people they take out are confident enough to be safe.
So, to begin with, Steve and Dave will be leading trips by invitation to paddlers they knows have the skills needed. Don’t be offended if you aren’t invited (I haven’t been!). To make sure people who want to join sea kayak trips can gain the necessary experience, Steve and will be running some training sessions in sea kayaks on the river.
Until we can clone Steve and Dave, we will take a time to build up our sea kayak trips, but, in the meantime, we aim to get out onto the sea each Sunday (weather and tides willing) to do surfing or paddleboarding, so all our members can enjoy our wonderful setting.
