Our Club Coaches

All our coaches are volunteers. Without them, our Club would not function. 

They freely give their time, expertise and encouragement to help us all improve, whether we are novice paddlers or looking to hone our skills. They all have a Coaching or Paddlesport Instructor qualification, First Aid and are DBS checked.

Stuart N – Secretary and Paddlesport Instructor

Stuart ensures that all of the Club’s policies are fit for purpose and that we have clear operating procedures for all our activities.
As a Paddlesport Instructor, Stuart provides a calm and patient approach to support every paddler develop their confidence and challenge their skills.

Chris B – Paddlesport Instructor

Chris is a relatively new member of the Club but he has leapt in and qualified as a Paddlesport Instructor. His craft of choice is a kayak and, at the moment, his focus is on developing his whitewater and surf skills.

Pat O – Coach

Pat is an experienced coach who brings her expertise and skills to lead skills sessions at Cuckmere. She is particularly good at our ‘Come and Try It’ sessions where she introduces novices to the joy of paddling and (hopefully) sets them on the path to joining the Club.

Justin E – Coach and Paddlesport Leader

Justin always gets really positive comments from the many new members he has helped get onto the water for the first time. He has brilliant patience and is calm and supportive. He is a really valuable coach who is also responsible for lots of excellent river trips.

Meg E – Coaching Officer and Coach

Meg is the first point of contact for all coaches and instructors. She sorts out the rota for the season so that every Club session is covered by the number of qualified leaders needed. Meg also leads on training for coaches to make every coach still feels challenged in their own paddling and their leadership skills.

Nicola H – Chair and Paddlesport Leader

Nicola joined the Club in 2017. She found a Club that is full of lovely people ready to share their enthusiasm, expertise and skills.
As Chair, Nicola’s role is to coordinate the Committee and make sure every officer can achieve what they want to for the Club.

Nick BC – Coach

Nick has completed the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Leader Award so he can take Club trips out into the sea, through the surf and beyond!

Nick C – Coach

Nick C is an expert in the canoe. He paddles in style… His beautifully crafted wooden canoe, he bought in the 1960s is the envy of anyone who sees it. And he rarely even gets his feet wet!

Iain P – Coach

Iain P is our longest standing coach. His natural habitat is the surf and so can always be found heading up a trip to the sea when the weather is right for catching a wave.

Kate W – Safeguarding + Welfare Officer and Paddlesport Instructor

The Safeguarding Officer makes sure that all our coaches and instructors are up to date with their DBS checks and First Aid training. Kate is the first point of contact for members, volunteers, young people and parents with any issues concerning safeguarding. Each volunteer is responsible for the risk assessment for their planned trip, but Kate can advise. On the rare occasion that there is an accident, Kate makes sure it is reported correctly following British Canoeing guidelines.

Tom J can be seen doing amazing playboat tricks, which have included launching off the bridge and dropping into the Cuckmere. As well as kayak somersaults, Tom is also excellent at coaching more staid paddling techniques.

Carol L – Coach

Carol L is definitely the Club Mum. She is to be found in a canoe providing excellent coaching. She is also the brilliant BBQ queen on all our special events.

Ali L – Coach

Ali L coaches across all crafts but her passion lies with the SUP. When the weather is not blowing a gale, Ali is happy to introduce people to SUP-ping or help you build up your speed.

Coach Steve D

Steve D – Coach and Awards Officer

Steve, a long term member of club, enjoys whitewater, surf and sea kayaking, as well as the odd open canoe paddle. Steve is now bringing his extensive experience of paddling, coaching and the Club to develop a new role, that of Awards Officer. Steve will lead on the British Canoeing Awards for all members who want to formally progress their skills.

Darren A – Events Officer and Paddlesport Instructor

Darren joined the club in 2015, shortly after buying a sea kayak. Then soon discovered white water river running… And got hooked. Now he enjoys a range of disciplines. As a Paddlesport Instructor, Darren is hoping to gets lots of other people hooked too.

As Events Officer, Darren wants to support lots of trips – river paddles, camping, whitewater, off-the-water socials and build up a calendar of core events. Do get in touch if you have any requests or suggestions for trips and events.

Dave L – Equipment + Safety Officer and Paddlesport Instructor

As Paddlesport Instructor, Dave reveals his patience with new paddlers and his passion for the Club.
Dave now oversees all the Club’s kit, checking that it is all safe but that we also have the best boats for our members. Dave will also process any requests that come in from members to borrow kit for trips.

David is a Level 2 Coach and loves to get his open boat out as much as he does his kayak. He used to struggle to get away from the family to coach at the Club… He has solved this now as his children come along and paddle too.
