🚣‍♀️🌿 CVCC Goes Up the River – Paddle to Alfriston 🌿🚣‍♂️
Date: 17th May (based on tides & weather)
Free for all CVCC Members

Submerse yourself in the beauty of the South Downs National Park with this peaceful paddle up the River Cuckmere to the historic village of Alfriston. It’s the perfect way to disconnect from daily life, explore nature, and enjoy time with fellow paddlers — whether you’re on a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard.

🗓 Trip Details

  • Start time: 9:30am (from the Barn)

  • Return: Approx. 4:00pm

  • Ability level: All members welcome — no prior experience required, but you do need to paddle the distance.

  • Craft: Kayak, Canoe, SUP – your choice

  • Cost: Free (members only)

🥪 Lunch: Bring a packed lunch, or grab something from Alfriston (though most people picnic by the river). Toilets available nearby in the village.

🌊 Paddle Route
We’ll set off from our usual launch point near Cuckmere Haven, glide through the flower-rich grasslands of the Cuckmere Valley, past Litlington and the iconic white chalk horse, and onward to Alfriston for a riverside break and bite to eat.

The trip follows the incoming tide out, and the outgoing tide back — giving us a natural assist both ways!

📍 Put In / Take Out Info

  • Put in: Easy – from the Barn

  • River crossing: We’ll assist with seal launches or step-in access as needed. Help will be available for everyone!

  • Conditions: Tidal river, carefully timed with the tides. Wind is our biggest variable — we’ll reschedule if weather is unfavourable.

🎒 What to Bring

  • Boat, paddle & buoyancy aid

  • Lunch and water

  • Weather-appropriate layers (it can change quickly!)

  • Sunscreen / hat if sunny

  • Drybag if you’re bringing valuables or electronics

You can register below or simply show up on the day — but it’s first come, first served, so registering in advance is recommended.

This is one of our favourite mini-trips — beautiful scenery, relaxed pace, and great company. We hope to see you there!
