More information:

Submerse yourself in the South Downs National Park by exploring it on water. Paddle past plenty of wildlife away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and get a different perspective on the historic and classically English village of Alfriston

To find out more about it, read Gerry’s excellent review Up The River of last year’s trip.

We are planning a paddle up to Alfriston, where we will stop for lunch before padding back to the barn.

This trip is open to members of all abilities. You can paddleboard, kayak or canoe the trip.

We will set off about 9.30am from the barn, but please note that you will be back later than the end of the usual sessions: probably about 4pm.

You can either bring a packed lunch or you can get something to eat in Alfriston before paddling back (Most of us bring a pack lunch usually).

There’s no cost to members for this trip.

It’s a fab mini trip.

You can sign up below or it will be first come first served on the day.

Other Information

Put in/Take out: Put in is from our usual start so very easy. We then cross over the river by taking usually use the steps or seal launch the side of the River – not quite as easy as the put in but we will help everybody and be able to hold your boat if you need assistance.

Water conditions: This part is tidal and has been planned carefully with the tide so paddling conditions are easier. Our biggest challenge is the weather condition and the wind which means that this trip could get rescheduled if we believe that it is too windy.

Sights and features on the trip:  We start our trip at Cuckmere Haven, an area of true beauty with flower rich chalk grassland and over-wintering wildfowl and colourful wild flowers, making our way along the river Cuckmere inland to Alfriston. As the river meanders along Cuckmere valley and into Litlington we’ll pass the giant white chalk horse that dominates the view of the left side of the valley. Once we get to Alfriston there’s time for a Lunch Break (Real bathrooms available not far where we would stop from Lunch (Pub or car park Bathrooms)) before heading back to Cuckmere with the outgoing tide.

What to bring: This is a nice relaxing trip so bring plenty of water (or other drink of choice) and some food for lunch. In addition to your boat and a buoyancy aid it is advisable to bring some additional outer layer clothing in case the weather changes during the trip.
